The project theme combines three topics: digital spaces, art exhibitions, and difficult logistics.
The necessity for such an event is driven by three problems:
- Many student competitions are only open to students from specific universities or particular countries.
- The topic of decentralization, closed borders, and emigration is very relevant.
- Virtual art has become less in demand over the last five years, yet more institutions continue to provide online access to art.

The Frank Lloyd Wright virtual museum in Second Life 2010
RESEARCH
Until the 2000s The first virtual museums emerged before 2000, before the web environment became popular among the art community.
1989– 1993 The world’s first virtual museum operated during these years, created by La société de conservation du présent.
1999 The Guggenheim Museum opened an experimental interactive museum not only for disseminating the collection abroad but also as a platform for cyber art.

Tallinna kunstihoone virtuaalnäitused
Virtual exhibitions of the Tallinn Art Building
Eesti Kunstihoone has a section for virtual exhibitions. This is a separate online platform where posters are displayed. Each poster leads to a real space where the exhibition is taking place. You can approach each exhibit. There is information about both the exhibits and the exhibition itself. This is not a graphic visualization but a real image of the exhibition, which gives the feeling of visiting in real time.
HSE ART GALLERY x IVAN GORSHKOV — 100 YEARS IN ART
HSE ART GALLERY x IVAN GORSHKOV — 100 YEARS IN ART
This exhibition is made on the KUNSTMATRIX platform. The platform allows artists and galleries to create 3D exhibitions and art events virtually. KUNSTMATRIX is suitable not only for artists but also for curators. One can use the provided space model or create a space independently. The exhibition can include paintings, sculptures, audio, and video exhibits.
Brodsky’s museum-apartment 'One and a half rooms'
A digital project within the actual apartment of Brodsky. Video projects are shown there, and photographs and other various materials are projected on the walls. ''The main concept of 'One and a Half Rooms' is to preserve the authentic emptiness within them.''
Multimedia art space
A group that rethinks the concept of the traditional museum and transforms classical art into the dimension of digital space. In a dark room, animated paintings of world art are projected on canvases, showing what can be called 'alive' art, accompanied by musical compositions.
Arts and culture
Google Arts & Culture is an online platform of high-resolution images and videos of artworks and cultural artifacts from partner cultural organizations throughout the world, operated by Google. Through the Virtual Gallery Tour users can virtually ‘walk through’ the galleries. Users can compile any number of images from the partner organizations and save specific views of artworks to create a personalized virtual exhibition.
National Museum of Women in the Arts
The interactive 'exhibition' is more like a catalog supplementing the real exhibition, providing an opportunity to comfortably familiarize oneself with the exhibits. Many museums have such an option, which is not often applied to exhibitions.
Virtual art gallery
The gallery is unlimited in reality and accessibility for all. This gallery represents a democratic world of art. The platform creates immersive ways to explore art online. The platform offers the opportunity to create your own exhibition in a 3D space and visit other exhibitions created by the art community.
Golden bee
This is a global biennial of graphic design. Participants from different countries take part in the exhibition. This is a physical event, as participants send their posters. Such format work can be printed in any country, with no need to physically send the original. The main requirement is to send a correctly formatted file.
Border art
The theme of closed borders has long been present in the art environment. There are exhibitions and festivals that speak on this topic. The theme touches on many aspects: migration, culture, nationality, etc.
CONCLUSIONS OF THE RESEARCH
Digital art platforms are carving out their space in the art market, especially for contemporary art.
The themes of decentralisation, emigration, and various types of borders are gaining popularity in today’s society.
Viewing an exhibition online in a 3D format and/or through recorded exhibition spaces provides an experience comparable to visiting a physical exhibition.
The review of the list of items presented at the exhibition lacks a businesslike character, not encouraging the viewer to engage in reflection.
A gallery of works in the form of a virtual space from Counter Design Studio
CONCEPT
An international online exhibition on the topic of art today. The project allows all interested art students from various countries to participate in the online exhibition and present any piece of art on the given theme. The works are displayed in an online space, demonstrating that art exists beyond the physical confines that can be limited.
Additionally, a physical exhibition is being prepared, where physical objects that can be delivered will be showcased, while the items from the online exhibition will be marked with QR codes.
In the modern world, we deal with closed borders, long journeys, high travel costs, and other challenges. Students may not always be able to cope with this. Foreign students are often restricted by their citizenship, as not every event or competition is suitable for them. Thus, the online gallery space serves as a safe haven for the art community and a testament that art evolves along with our world and can overcome any barriers.
In today’s world, people have long been accustomed to making calls for help in transferring items from one country to another. Such announcements can often be found on various forums, Telegram channels, and other social networks. If an artist cannot come in person, it does not mean that their work cannot be exhibited.
Alongside the online exhibition, a physical exhibition can also be held. There are pieces of art that can be easily transported in a best friend’s suitcase or by a kind Samaritan for a chocolate bar. These can be brought into a physical space. Works presented online are showcased via QR codes, leading visitors into a virtual art environment.
WHAT WILL BE AT THE 2025 EXHIBITION?
From June 25 to August 25, you will find a student exhibition that will extend beyond our university and unite students from Moscow, Estonia, and Finland. The exhibition will take place in the digital space, allowing all those who couldn’t travel to the capital to witness the progress of the young generation of artists and designers.
This includes students, graduates, and faculty from the art industry, without whom the event cannot take place. The audience also comprises viewers—participants of the event, their families, friends, and industry people. All those who find art interesting and important, as well as those who care about the theme of virtual art and cultural exchange today.
