Public art installation «The Branching» was created by filling the gaps in a park bench with branches gathered from the park, and it encapsulates reflections on the boundaries of nature’s life and the interaction between nature and objects of human activity.
Installation «Branching Out» 2024
The project features trees in various states—one irreversibly processed, the other retaining its natural form. Twigs are inserted into the gap of the bench to simulate sprouting. This gesture attempts to explore the boundary where life exists for natural material and what stage constitutes the end. Visually, it seems as though nature is absorbing a man-made object, intending to return it to the earth, but we understand the futility of this effort because the bench itself serves as the «soil» for the «sprouting» twigs. By layering natural resources in their organic state onto a human-made object, we trace humanity’s desire to correct—or rather, to camouflage—the results of its existence and return everything to its origins, to a natural appearance. However, this is impossible, and the object only achieves a visual resemblance to a bush.
