Chocolate is one of the main gifts that accompany declarations of love, alongside postcards, flowers, and plush toys. Chocolate as a way to say, «I love you.» The shape of the bar is a way to say how I love you.
I am creating three collage forms based on the lives of three historical women whose love lives were full of dramatic, often unhappy events. These lives serve as a metaphor for emotions so powerful and dramatic that they can only be compared to great historical love stories.
The collage-like quality and «junkiness» of the work convey a sense of tangled, unclear emotions. The juxtaposition of the high—such as historical events—and the low—like stereotypical declarations of love through cliché gifts—creates a contrast that exposes the absurdity of the situation, making the affected pathos look comical.
