Muammar Gaddafi, upon taking power in Libya in 1969, nationalized the oil industry and directed oil revenues toward the development of education and healthcare, which contributed to increased literacy and life expectancy among the population. However, his rule was accompanied by political repression, torture, and extrajudicial executions of regime opponents. After more than four decades in power, Gaddafi was captured and killed in October 2011. His final moments were filmed on mobile phone cameras, and images of his body quickly spread through global media.
